Private Armored Transport in Switzerland: What the Law Allows

Switzerland has one of the world's most permissive frameworks for private armored transport — and one of the most stringent for the carriage of personnel and weapons.

Privately-registered armored vehicles up to VR9 ballistic and ER3 explosive certification are legal in Switzerland for civilian use, subject to standard registration. The Swiss federal authority does not require special licensing for the vehicle itself.

What is and is not allowed

What changes is the carriage of armed personnel. Swiss federal weapons law restricts the carrying of firearms in public spaces to specific authorisations. Our protection officers operate under explicit Swiss-issued licences for each principal mission.

For most missions, the right answer is an armored S-Class with a single unarmed protocol-trained chauffeur. The vehicle handles 95% of the threat profile, and the absence of visible security is itself a security feature.

When armed protection is appropriate

When the principal is the subject of an active threat. When the itinerary includes high-exposure venues. When the principal's home jurisdiction requires armed protection by law and it cannot be temporarily reduced for the Swiss leg.

In all three cases, we coordinate the armed detail with the appropriate Swiss authority before the mission. Documentation is held by the senior coordinator and presented on request to the federal police.

What we recommend

Begin the conversation at least two weeks before the mission. Provide the threat assessment from the principal's home detail, the itinerary, and any specific venue concerns. We respond with a Swiss-specific protocol document.
